How To Tell If A Website Has Google Analytics Installed

Do you want to tell if a website has Google Analytics installed?

Maybe you’ve installed Google Analytics on your own site and want to confirm if it has been set up correctly.

In this short article I’m going to show you how to tell if a website has Google Analytics installed.

Checking On A Site You Own & Have Tried Installing Analytics On

If you want to check if a website has Google Analytics installed correctly, and it’s a site you own and you’ve already gone through the setup process, then the first port of call is to go to google.com/analytics and log in to your account with the details you used to create your analytics profile.

Then go to ‘real time’ from the Google Analytics navigation menu as per here:

What you then want to do is actually load up your website on your phone/tablet/computer.

If analytics is installed correctly (and you aren’t using any kind of ad blocking script that might actually prevent analytics from working correctly) then you should see a hit appear in the real time analytics:

If this doesn’t happen, then double check your installation as per the steps below.

Checking On Any Website

Imagine you want to check if Google Analytics is on any website in the world - even one you don’t own/control - wouldn’t that be handy?

Here’s how to check.

Firstly, make sure you are using the Chrome browser on your computer (I believe this also works for Firefox, but I use Chrome or Safari definitely on device, so I will talk through the Chrome instructions).

Secondly, go to the Chrome Web Store (Google it) and search for the ‘Google Tag Assistant’ extension:

Install this extension on your site.

Now the extension is installed, the next step is to go to a website and then activate the extension by clicking on it:

Now refresh the page, and you should see something like this:

You can then click into it and see what Google scripts/tags are installed, including analytics!

The great thing about this is that it is also very helpful for identifying if your Google Analytics on your site isn’t installed correctly.

And there you have it, that’s how you tell if a website has Google Analytics installed.
